Passion for Preservation
Friends of Mansfield Battlefield was formed in 2002 when lignite mining destroyed land that was part of the Red River Campaign of the U.S. Civil War in 1864. The group was formed to advocate for preservation and education of the campaign and the Mansfield Battlefield. The Friends led a charge against powerful business interests operating the mine and brought national and international attention to its significance. It dedicated time and money to preserving land and educating people about the campaign and its historic significance.
